Tours & Excursions

Experiences beyond the hotel that we recommend

Cenotes (Ik Kil, Suytun, Cenote Azul)

$30-80 USD
Nature

Mich's Tip: A must. Natural swimming holes inside caves. Suytun is the most Instagram-worthy; Ik Kil the most famous.

Chichen Itza

$80-150 USD (tour)
Culture

Mich's Tip: A Wonder of the World. Go early (arrive by 8 AM), bring water and sunscreen. A guided tour is worth it.

Isla Mujeres

$20-50 USD (ferry)
Beach

Mich's Tip: A 15-minute ferry from Cancun. Playa Norte is one of the best beaches in the world. Rent a golf cart to explore the island.

Tulum (Ruins + Beach)

$50-120 USD
Culture + Beach

Mich's Tip: Mayan ruins overlooking the sea. Go early to beat the crowds, and pair it with a nearby cenote.

Xcaret / Xel-Ha / Xplor Parks

$100-180 USD
Theme park

Mich's Tip: If you're not staying at Hotel Xcaret, buy tickets online in advance (10-25% off depending on park, date and promotion).

Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos / the Reef

$40-80 USD
Water

Mich's Tip: Puerto Morelos has the most pristine reef in the area — and it's less touristy than Cozumel.

Seasons & Weather

Best months

November through April: dry weather, no sargassum, temperatures of 25-30°C

Avoid

September (hurricanes + sargassum). July-August if sargassum bothers you.

Sargassum

Sargassum season runs May through September, worst in July-August. Cancun's hotel zone is usually less affected than the Riviera Maya. Hotels with a cove (Xcaret) or on an island (Isla Mujeres, Cozumel) see the least impact.

Weather

Hurricane season: June through November (September-October is the peak). Brief showers are common in summer.

How to Get There & Tips

Airport

Cancun International Airport (CUN). A major hub with flights from around the world.

From Mexico City

A 2-2.5 hour direct flight from Mexico City, with 10+ daily flights on Aeromexico, Volaris and VivaAerobus.

From the USA

Direct flights from 30+ U.S. cities. Cancun is Mexico's best-connected airport.

DON'T exchange money at the airport — the rate is terrible. Pay by card or use an ATM in town.

Airport taxis are pricey ($50-80 USD to the hotel zone). Ask us about a private transfer.

Cancun's hotel zone is shaped like a '7'. Hotels to the north (Punta Sam, Costa Mujeres) are farther from downtown.

Rent a car only if you plan to explore on your own. If you're staying at an all-inclusive, you won't need one.

Biodegradable sunscreen is REQUIRED at cenotes and eco-parks.

Mich's Top 3 — Best Value 2026

1) Hotel Xcaret Mexico — for families that want EVERYTHING included (parks, meals, transfers). 2) Hyatt Ziva Cancun — the best value in the hotel zone. 3) Nickelodeon — for Nick-fan kids and parents who want a premium all-inclusive.

Alternatives: Honeymoon: Xcaret Arte or Rosewood Mayakoba. Tight budget: Riu Cancun or Grand Palladium. Total luxury: NIZUC or Banyan Tree.
