When should I start planning my Disney trip?

Enter your travel date and get a complete planning timeline.

Every destination has its own planning calendar. As a rule of thumb: start planning Disney World 8 to 12 months ahead (more for peak season), Disney cruises up to 12 months ahead, and Universal Orlando 6 to 8 months ahead. Use the calculator to get your exact timeline based on your travel dates.

The perfect calendar for your Disney trip

Not all times of year are equal for visiting Disney World. The off-season (January after New Year's, February, September after Labor Day) brings the lowest crowds and the friendliest prices. Peak season covers Easter week, the last two weeks of December, and summer vacation (June-July). During peak season, hotels cost 20% to 50% more, and waits at popular attractions can top 2 hours.

The best windows for families are usually February (before Spring Break), September (the low-price season) and the first week of December (before the Christmas rush). If your trip lines up with a special event like Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, book even further ahead.

What happens if I don't plan ahead?

Planning late isn't impossible, but it has real consequences: Disney's Value resorts (the most affordable) may be sold out, you won't get reservations at iconic restaurants like Be Our Guest or Cinderella's Royal Table, and cruise prices may have climbed 30% to 60%. And with less than 60 days to go, you lose the chance to book Disney World dining reservations at the opening window.

If you're reading this and your trip is less than 6 months away, don't panic. Reach out to an expert agent who can optimize what's still bookable and find availability where you wouldn't. Plenty of families pull off incredible trips even on a late start — it just takes more flexibility and the right help.

Frequently asked questions about planning

We recommend starting 8-12 months out. Disney hotel reservations open up to 499 days in advance, and dining reservations open 60 days before check-in. For peak season, the earlier the better — Value resorts fill up fast.
At Disney World: exactly 60 days before your check-in. The most popular restaurants (Be Our Guest, Cinderella's Royal Table, Oga's Cantina, Space 220) fill up in minutes. At Universal, many restaurants take walk-ins, but for the popular ones it's smart to book 60 days out.
At least 10-12 months. The most popular itineraries (Bahamas, Caribbean) fill up fast, and verandah and concierge staterooms are the first to go. Booking early also gets you the best prices — fares rise as the sail date approaches.
It's not impossible, but it can mean higher prices and fewer options. Value resorts may be full, popular restaurants will be booked, and cruise fares will be higher. If you're reading this and your trip is less than 6 months away, contact us! We can still help you optimize what's left.
It depends on how you're traveling. If you're booking a PACKAGE (hotel + tickets), lock it in several months ahead along with the hotel. If you only need TICKETS (no hotel), you can wait longer — typically 2 to 4 months out. Heads up: Disney World tickets use date-based pricing, and the cheapest dates sell out first.
The best windows for price and low crowds are: January (after the 6th), February, September, and the first week of December. February and September also tend to have some of the best airfare deals. If you want special events, September-October brings Halloween and the Food & Wine Festival.
The lowest-crowd stretches at Walt Disney World are January (second half), February (before Presidents' Day), and September (after Labor Day). During those weeks hotels are cheaper, lines are shorter, and the whole experience is more relaxed. Note: some events and restaurants may run reduced hours.
Disney lets you book hotels up to 499 days out (about 16 months). For peak season we recommend booking at least 10-12 months ahead; for the off-season, 6-8 months is usually enough. Most Disney reservations allow free cancellation, so booking early is risk-free.
